Dear Compatriots, Historians and Genealogists,

The Marietta Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution invites you to join in the celebration of Marietta’s 221st Birthday celebration by attending the 5 Days with the Patriots and Pioneers of Washington County from Friday, April 3, 2009 thru Tuesday, April 7, 2009. This program will include events over a 5-day period that presents a broad range of topics for all ages and skill levels of history, genealogy, historical research and museum tours.

Area participants include: Marietta Chapter, Sons of the American Revolution; Marietta Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution; Washington County Historical Society; Belpre Historical Society; Lower Muskingum Historical Society; New Matamoras Historical Society; Western Washington County Historical Society; Washington County Chapter Ohio Genealogy Society; Fearing Camp Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War; youth activities for Boy Scouts; Girl Scouts; School groups; churches and many others.

Learning history: On April 4th, the Marietta Chapter Sons of the American Revolution will sponsor a PATRIOTS AND PIONEERS HISTORY AND GENEALOGY CONFERENCE at Washington State Community College. The conference is designed to promote genealogy and history activities in our region. Classes will have appeal to young and old, amateur to the advanced. The first day of registration will be Friday, March 10. A list of classes, class descriptions and biographical details on the conference speakers are available by clicking on the links provided here. Those wishing to participate in the conference should submit our advanced registration form as soon as possible as classes are assigned on a first come, first served basis and have limited seating available. Having trouble understanding something on your registration form? Downloading an example form may help.

Programming: Through financial donations, we have rented Campus Martius Museum for April 3rd and 4th and have tours available at three other museums: Henry Fearing House, Belpre Farmers Castle Museum, Beverly's Oliver Tucker Museum. All will have special programs and exhibits to engage the area residents in the pursuit of their ancestral or cultural past. A bell ringing of the carillon at the First Congregational Church will be performed with various patriotic tunes. All the events are free to the public with the exception of the all day conference at Washington State Community College, the Long Rifle Show at the Lafayette Hotel and the historical societies' dinner.

Research opportunities: The Washington County Public Library, History and Genealogy Department, the Special Collections at Marietta College (at the newly opened library), the Washington County Historical Society Archives and the Daughters of the American Revolution Library will be available to assist researchers.

Youth participation: For a second year, Warren Local Schools is taking the lead in an attempt to join all high schools in Washington County in an extended research project to scan and digitize the Josephine Phillips' 1810 Census Index Cards. The results of this project will be published in book form and the material will be placed on our website in a searchable database format. Many other high school and grade school groups are also working on special projects. In 2008, the Boy Scouts prepared a 5-mile Heritage Trail hike in Marietta with testing and awards, Girl Scouts prepared a museum guide for badge requirements that will continue again this year (see mariettasar.org).

Overall Purpose: In the spring of 2007 our chapter began developing the PATRIOTS AND PIONEERS PROJECT to honor and perpetuate the memory of our rich local heritage. We have begun research on this project which will record comprensive accounts and stories of the Patriots (and their descendants who resided here at one point) with Washington County, Ohio connections who gave service during the American Revolution. It is our goal to publish a series of books called "REVOLUTIONARY WAR PATRIOTS OF WASHINGTON COUNTY, OHIO. To enlist the support and help of the public we have established this web site and collaborated with many societies, schools and libraries. A majority of the citizens of Washington County have bloodlines that run to the Patriots of the Revolution and many do not know their pioneer past. I hope you will join us to continue this exciting endeavor as we discover history together!
